To realize its ambitious goal of nurturing prospective industrial, academic, and research leaders with creativity and advanced mechanical convergence abilities, the School offers various programs to facilitate and streamline the nurturing process. The major programs are as follows:

Operation of the undergraduate thesis research program

Undergraduate students can apply for the undergraduate thesis research program starting in their third year. This program aims to provide students with early access to research opportunities, thus stimulating their major-related interests while deepening their knowledge. The program specifically aims to provide students with early exposure to research, strengthen their research competencies, and facilitate a smooth transition from undergraduate to graduate school. Furthermore, students in their fourth year can broaden their research horizons by incorporating this program into their thesis research courses.

Operation of the “Opening Day” program

The School operates the Opening Day program to improve teacher–student relationships and provide practical counseling and guidance on courses and career paths. This program enables students to meet with their academic advisor during the initial week of every semester to discuss course scheduling and prerequisite completion status in accordance with their individual aptitudes and interests. Graduating students can also fully exploit this counseling session to confirm their graduation requirements and carve a purpose-driven career path.

Open-Lab

Targeting students interested in undergraduate thesis research and graduate studies, labs within the School of Mechanical Engineering create posters every year and exhibit them for three days. Through these posters, undergraduate students can grasp the big picture of each lab’s research endeavors, select a research topic that interests them, and contact the relevant lab to proceed with their research.

We encourage students majoring in mechanical engineering to develop comprehensive competencies to understand and interpret phenomena involving heat, force, and movement. To walk students through the world of mechanical engineering, the School provides effective and well-designed curricula that encompass different R&D fields of mechanical engineering: engineering mathematics and numerical analysis required for mathematical competencies and simulations; dynamics of force and motion; thermodynamics and fluid dynamics for heat and flow; solid mechanics and materials science and engineering for stress and strain; and kinematics and robotics for robot drive systems. Students can make the most of these disciplines to grow into core talent possessing essential R&D capabilities for precision design, simulations, experiments, and instrumentation.

Reflecting the multifaceted world of mechanical engineering, many of the School’s alumni continue to stand out in all industrial fields, playing a pivotal role in launching the nation’s technology to the next level. Some of the key sectors include mechanical fields (automobiles, robots, aerospace, defense, precision machinery, heavy industry, shipbuilding, and steel), electric and electronic fields (semiconductors and information and communication), and chemical and bio fields. Certain graduates are active participants in the nation's economy in capacities such as startup entrepreneurs, patent attorneys, and government officials. In an effort to cope with the advanced knowledge-based society, others earned their master’s or doctoral degree and have developed into top-notch experts, taking center stage at domestic and foreign educational institutions, national research institutes, and conglomerate-affiliated research institutes.
